CHAPEL HILL, N.C. β€” Bill Belichick is no stranger to a challenge, but his latest one is turning heads.

In December, Belichick was formally introduced as the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s next head football coach. On Thursday, the university officially released Belichick’s contract.

WFMY News 2 initially reviewed the terms of his reported contract, but now we have the full picture.

Compensation

Belichick’s base salary is $1 million annually, paid monthly. On top of that, he’ll rake in a supplemental income of $9 million each year for promotional and media duties. These include appearances at events sponsored by UNC’s advertisers and donors, press conferences, and other special engagements.

As WFMY News 2 previously reported, Belichick has a five-year contract with the university but only the first three years are guaranteed for the base salary and supplemental income, totaling $10 million annually.

Performance-Based Bonuses

Belichick’s contract with UNC ties his compensation to the football program’s performance both on and off the field. He can earn bonuses for regular-season wins, bowl game appearances, College Football Playoff (CFP) participation, final poll rankings, team academic performance, and awards like Coach of the Year.

Here’s how the regular-season win bonuses break down:

  • 8 wins: $150,000
  • 9 wins: $200,000
  • 10 wins: $250,000
  • 11 wins: $300,000
  • 12 wins: $350,000

Additional bonuses include:

  • $200,000 for an appearance in the ACC Championship Game, plus another $300,000 if UNC wins it.
  • $150,000 for a non-CFP bowl appearance.

For the CFP, Belichick can earn anywhere from $750,000 for participation to $1.75 million for winning the championship.

Belichick’s bonuses for UNC’s final CFP rankings are as follows:

  • Top 25: $250,000
  • Top 20: $300,000
  • Top 15: $375,000
  • Top 10: $425,000
  • Top 5: $500,000

For off-the-field success, Belichick can earn up to $200,000 based on his team’s academic performance. Recognition as Conference Coach of the Year nets $100,000, while a National Coach of the Year award brings in $250,000.

Perks and Benefits

Belichick’s contract also includes numerous perks. UNC is covering $100,000 in relocation expenses and providing a $100,000 entertainment allowance for football program activities.

Other benefits include membership at the Chapel Hill Country Club, extra tickets to sporting events, and access to a private aircraft for up to 25 hours annually.

Contract Termination

Both Belichick and UNC have outlined their options for ending the agreement. If UNC terminates the contract with cause, Belichick will only receive what he’s earned up to the termination date. Termination without cause before December 31, 2027, will entitle him to the remaining base salary, bonuses, and supplemental income through that date.

On the other hand, if Belichick decides to leave before June 1, 2025, he faces a $10 million buyout. After that date, the buyout drops to $1 million.

Looking Ahead

Belichick isn’t wasting any time. He’s already focused on recruiting top talent and implementing professional-level training techniques for the Tar Heels. It’s clear Belichick and UNC are hoping for a new era of football next season.
