Charlotte FC dominates Atlanta 2-0 in 2025 home opener

A pair of goals in the second half of the match went unanswered by the visiting team.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. β€” Charlotte FC was away for the first match of the 2025 MLS season, ending it in a 2-2 draw against the Seattle Sounders that saw the home team score an own goal to level the playing field. This week, however, the black and blue were back home for the home opener, hosting league rival Atlanta United in an afternoon match at Bank of America Stadium.

The fortress, as the team calls the stadium, was defended well.

Neither team could find the net in the first half of the match, but that changed after the break. Charlotte striker Pep Biel found the net at the 49-minute mark. He wouldn’t be alone for long either, as Charlotte’s newest midfielder Wilfried Zaha punched it in just five minutes later, quickly lifting the team up to a two-point lead over Atlanta.

The clock ticked on. Charlotte midfielder Brandt Bronico was handed a yellow card along with striker Patrick Agyemang, both Charlotte and Atlanta made some substitutions, and Atlanta United midfielder Bartosz Slisz also got hit with a yellow card. But even with eight minutes of stoppage time tacked on to the match, Atlanta just had no answer for the pair of goals Charlotte made early in the second half.

When the clock ran out, Charlotte FC was victorious 2-0, earning its first win of the season and at home for 2025.

The black and blue are on the road again on Sunday, March 9, to face off against Inter Miami CF, which currently is home to soccer legend Lionel Messi. Miami currently has 3 wins historically against Charlotte, which has a pair of wins against Miami as well. Both teams share two draws as well.
