The 2025 Leagues Cup competition will exclusively feature interleague matches between MLS and Liga MX clubs through the quarterfinals.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. β Three Mexican teams will visit Bank of America Stadium this summer to face Charlotte FC in the revamped Leagues Cup competition.
Charlotte FC will host FC Juarez, C.D. Guadalajara, and C.F. Monterrey in three home matches. Each MLS team will face three Liga MX teams while each Liga MX team will face three MLS teams in phase one of the competition.
The Leagues Cup will exclusively feature interleague matches through the quarterfinals.Β
There are 36 teams participating in the 2025 Leagues Cup, all 18 Liga MX teams and the 18 MLS teams that competed in the 2024 playoffs.
The clubs were then split into three regionally-divided tiers based on their 2024 rankings and given one match against a team in each tier. Charlotte FC is a tier 2 team in the competition. Moterrey is tier 1, Guadalajara is tier 2, and Juarez is tier 3.
The results of these matches will be tallied in a league-specific table. The top four MLS teams and the top four Liga MX teams will advance to the knockout rounds.
Leagues Cup play begins in late July. Charlotte FC’s first match is against Juarez on July 31. Charlotte faces Guadalajara on Aug. 3 and Moterrey on Aug. 7.
The Leagues Cup was previously set up in a more traditional way with groups chosen at random and no consideration to ensure MLS teams faced Liga MX teams. The competition began in 2019.
Charlotte reached the quarterfinals in its first attempt at the tournament in 2022. The team lost to Inter Miami in that round.
Charlotte FC has one win and one draw against Liga MX teams in its history.
