Charlotte FC loses to Mess-less Miami



Miami’s Tadeo Allende scored the match’s only goal.

MIAMI β€” Inter Miami’s Tadeo Allende scored early in the first half against Charlotte FC to give Miami its second win of the season on Sunday.

Allende scored in the 46th minute before some fans were back to their seats from the halftime break. His score tipped in the bottom right of the net after a cross into the box from Luis SuΓ‘rez.

Charlotte (1-1-1) failed to score for the first time this season. Wilfried Zaha was poised to score in the first half but was pushed aside by Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari. The contact resulted in a red card for Ustari, forcing Miami to play with 10 men the rest of the way. Backup goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo took over in the box and kept Charlotte out of the net.

Zaha, Eryk Williamson, and others had chances late in the match to equalize but could not convert.

Miami (2-1-0) was playing without international superstar Lionel Messi for the second MLS match in a row. Messi was on the bench as a substitute but did not make an appearance. Miami’s coach cited fatigue for the reason he sat out a CONCACAF game on Thursday. No reason was given for his absence in Sunday’s game.

Miami is undefeated against Charlotte in five straight matches going back to October 2023, with three wins and two draws.Β 

Charlotte is sixth in the Eastern Conference, level on points with five other teams. Miami is second in the conference.

Charlotte returns home to face Cincinnati FC on Saturday, March 15 at Bank of America Stadium.
