Charlotte hopes to host CIAA basketball tournaments again



Charlotte hosted the CIAA basketball tournaments from 2006 to 2020.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. β€” Charlotte leaders are hoping to return a major basketball tournament to the city.

The city of Charlotte, Charlotte Sports, and the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority sent a bid to host the CIAA Men and Women’s Basketball tournaments for the 2027-2029 cycle. The Charlotte Sports Foundation confirmed the details to WCNC Charlotte’s Nick Carboni on Wednesday.

The CIAA is a conference in Division II of the NCAA. The conference is made up entirely of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte and Livingstone College in Salisbury are among the 12 schools in the conference.

Charlotte hosted the CIAA basketball tournaments from 2006 to 2020 at the Spectrum Center. The tournaments moved to Baltimore in 2022. North Carolina has hosted 49 of the 77 times the event has been held.

In a release about the bid, Charlotte leaders highlighted the longtime relationship between the city and the CIAA.Β 

“The CIAA Basketball Tournaments have always been more than games,” the release said. “They represent a celebration of excellence, tradition, and opportunity.”

Charlotte leaders touted the city’s venues, cultural attractions, and hospitality in the bid.Β
