Chase Briscoe, Joe Gibbs Racing fined after Daytona 500



Briscoe started on the pole and finished fourth in the race.

CONCORD, N.C. β€” NASCAR levied heavy penalties against Joe Gibbs Racing on Wednesday after discovering illegal modifications to Chase Briscoe’s car during a post-race inspection following the Daytona 500.

Briscoe, who won the pole and finished fourth in Sunday’s race, was docked 100 driver points and 10 playoff points after NASCAR found unauthorized changes to the spoiler base of his No. 19 Toyota. The spoiler base is a single-source vendor part that cannot be modified under NASCAR rules.

Joe Gibbs Racing was fined $100,000 and lost 100 owner points and 10 playoff points. Crew chief James Small was suspended for four races.

The L2-level penalty was discovered during a further inspection at NASCAR’s R&D Center in Concord. The team was found in violation of rules pertaining to overall assembled vehicles and spoiler specifications.

In separate penalties following the Daytona 500, Front Row Motorsports driver Todd Gilliland and Rick Ware Racing driver Cody Ware each lost 10 points for safety violations involving improperly stored ballast. Their teams were also penalized 10 owner points.

Briscoe’s pole position marked the first time a Toyota had won the top starting spot for NASCAR’s premier event. He was 10th in the points standings after the first race of the season, but will now have a steep hole to climb out of with negative 67 points to his name.
