UNION COUNTY, N.C. β A former NASCAR team owner and crew chief was severely injured by a fire at his home in Union County this month.
The fire happened at a home on Stevens Mill Road on the morning of Sunday, Jan. 12. Several agencies, including the Hemby Bridge Fire Department and Stallings Fire Department, responded to the scene.Β
Officials said that all of the people in the home survived. The fire’s cause was not released. The Union County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
FDNY Racing, a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series team said on Monday that a former crew chief for the team, Bob Rahilly, suffered third-degree burns in the fire. Rahilly will be hospitalized for two months at the Wake Forest University Hospital, according to the team.
Rahilly’s husband, Michael Thomas, said on Facebook that two of their cats tragically died in the fire. Thomas has been posting updates about Rahilly’s condition.
Rahilly co-owned RahMoc Enterprises with Butch Mock. The team competed in the NASCAR Cup Series from 1978 to 1992. Neil Bonnett, Dave Marcis, Morgan Shepherd, and Dick Trickle were among the drivers who raced for the team. RahMoc Enterprises won four races, including the 1983 Coca-Cola 600. Bonnett earned all four of the team’s victories in 1983 and 1988.
The team split in 1992, with Mock forming a new team and Rahilly becoming an engine builder and dealer for NASCAR teams. Rahilly would also serve as a crew chief for various Cup Series and Truck Series teams over the years.Β
Rahilly’s engine-building facility is still in business at the original site of the RahMoc Enterprises team in Concord.
