Jaylen Wells fell headfirst on the court after making a dunk in Memphis’s 124-100 win over Charlotte.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. β A Memphis Grizzlies player was sent to the hospital after being injured in a game against the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday.
Memphis forward Jaylen Wells was hurt after scoring a dunk against the Hornets in the second quarter of Tuesday’s game. Memphis won 124-100.
Wells was shoved by Hornets guard KJ Simpson while attempting the dunk and fell headfirst onto the court. He was taken off the court on a stretcher.
Simpson’s contact was labeled a flagrant penalty, causing him to be ejected from the game.
“[Wells] is an incredibly tough kid,” Tuomas Iisalo, the Grizzlies coach, said after the game. Luckily, heβs moving all of the extremities and unfortunately, he apparently has a broken wrist.”
The Grizzlies have not released a statement on Wells’s injury. He was reportedly taken to a hospital in Charlotte for further evaluation.
“I saw the fall at the endβ¦ Itβs tough, especially for somebody who plays a lot of minutes,” Guard Ja Morant, who scored a team-high 28 points, said. “Weβve just got to say with him, keep praying for him, let him know that Godβs got him.”
The Hornets also offered their best wishes to Wells after the game.
“A lot of guys walked over and either patted him on the back or went over to the coach and said something to the coach about how they apologize. I did the same thing because we donβt play dirty,” Charles Lee, Charlotte’s coach, said after the game. “I think it just happened in the heat of the moment in competition.”
Forward Miles Bridges said that Simpson felt bad about the situation.
