Hornets coach disappointed LaMelo Ball not named All-Star starter

Despite leading the fan vote amongst Eastern Conference guards by a wide margin, LaMelo Ball was not named as an All-Star starter on Thursday night.

Ball had the third-most votes from fellow players, but the seventh-most from media members.

Fan vote accounts for 50%, while players and media each carry 25%.

Jalen Brunson of the Knicks and Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell are the starting guards for the East.

Ball can still be selected as a reserve, which is decided by conference coaches. Reserves will be announced on Thursday, Jan. 30.

Hornets coach Charles Lee said he joined in the disappointment that Ball was not selected.

“I know how much he wanted it,” Lee said. “I know how much we wanted it for him as an organization. I think his numbers have spoken for himself.”

Ball is fourth in the NBA in scoring average, scoring 29 points per game. He made the All-Star game in his second season.
