Johnson C. Smith wins Black College Invitational Championship



Johnson C. Smith University won the Black College Invitational Championship by defeating the Panthers 65-59.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. β€” Johnson C. Smith defeated the Panthers 65-59, to win the Inaugural Black College Invitational Championship on Saturday afternoon inside Bojangles Coliseum.

In the third quarter, both teams scored 15 points each. In the fourth quarter, JCSU secured their win over CAU by outscoring 27-16.

While the NCAA Tournament captivated the nation this week, Charlotte hosted another significant collegiate basketball event: the inauguralΒ Black College Invitational Championship (BCIC).

The four-day tournament featuring teams from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) began Thursday at Bojangles Coliseum, with 16 teams each in both men’s and women’s brackets competing for the championship title. Charlotte’s own Johnson C. Smith University is among the participating schools.

“This is HBCU March Madness,” said Dr. Wes Bellamy, organizer of the tournament. “These HBCUs deserve to be able to play postseason basketball.”
