Why are Charlotte Knights allowed to have a fireworks show during a burn ban?

The answer is rather simple.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. β€” There is currently a statewide and local burn ban due to the dangerous wildfire conditions in the area. The burn ban prohibits most forms of open burning.Β

Some people asked WCNC Charlotte why the Charlotte Knights baseball team was allowed to have a fireworks show for its Opening Day celebration Friday night during a burn ban. The answer is rather simple.

“Fireworks displays are evaluated differently due to the controlled environment, on-site fire operations, and fire code oversight involved in permitted public events,” the Charlotte Fire Department explained WCNC Charlotte. “Tonight’s Charlotte Knights fireworks show is scheduled to move forward as planned. However, we are actively monitoring wind and weather conditions, and if they become unfavorable, the display may be modified or canceled for safety.”

CFD noted it will have fire inspectors on-site to monitor conditions, and all of the pyrotechnics are reviewed on a “case-by-case basis, based on product type, safety controls, and launch location.”

The department said most of the fireworks planned for Friday night’s display are close-proximity pyrotechnics that have “limited aerial components,” which lowers the risk for sparking a fire.

“We appreciate your attention to this and will continue to prioritize public safety in all decisions related to the burn ban and event operations,” CFD said in its statement.

It’s notable to mention Saturday’s game will the Knights’ first ever drone show. It will feature 150 drones that are programmed to tell the “history of baseball in Charlotte.” The drone show will last about 10 minutes.Β

Opening pitch for Friday night’s game against the Gwinnett Stripers is at 7:04 p.m. at Truist Field. Tickets are still available online.
