Byron stopped by the WCNC Live IMPACT studio to talk about his successful season so far
CHARLOTTE, N.C. β Two-time, and back-to-back Daytona 500 winner William Byron visited the WCNC Live Impact Studio on Tuesday afternoon.
The 27-year-old Charlotte native and driver of the No. 24 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports spoke with WCNC Charlotte Sports Director Nick Carboni about winning the Great American Race for the second year in a row.
“When the offseason comes, you get a chance to reflect on the 500,” Byron said. “There are so many goals and so much going on week to week I really haven’t taken a chance to reflect.”
Byron said it takes about four weeks to settle back in after winning the biggest race of the year, but it hasn’t slowed him down.
He currently sits first in Cup Series points with the victory, plus three top-five and four top-10 finishes.
“We picked up where we left off last year,” he said. “I feel like we’re really close. We’re leading the points but it’s a matter of fine-tuning things.”
Byron has finished third in the points standings the last two seasons as he chases his first Cup Series championship. This weekend he will race the short track at Martinsville Speedway.
Byron has tamed “The Paperclip,” winning the last two years in the Cup Series and once on a lower national series.
The prize for winning at Martinsville is a large, grandfather clock. Now Byron has three.
“I have one upstairs in my game room that’s a sim room and TV room, and I have two downstairs,” Byron said. One in my office, and the side of my living room. None of them are operational. I’ve heard they’re really loud. I like them staying off.”
Does he have room for a fourth?
“I definitely do,” he said. “I’ll start giving away clocks to my family at that point.”
