SPEEDWAY, Ind. β€” The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is ready for the 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500. Keep checking back here for live updates throughout the race.

Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden’s chances of winning again will be tough as he’ll start from the back of the pack.

Also, four-time winner HΓ©lio Castroneves is looking to make history as the first five-time winner.

Race

Lap 176 β€” Marcus Ericsson has kept the lead after his final stop and now leads Alex Palou, David Malukas, Pato O’Ward and Felix Rosenqvist.

Lap 175 β€” Pato O’Ward has caught David Malukas and Alex Palou. Meanwhile, Marcus Ericsson pits from the lead and is trying to stay with the leaders on pit exit.

Lap 174 β€”Β If the race goes to the end, Malukas is projected to have two laps more fuel than Alex Palou.

Lap 171 β€”Β David Malukas is able to stretch his fuel longer than everyone else and finally makes his stop. He comes out right in front of net race leader Alex Palou on the backstretch.

Lap 170 β€” Disaster for race leader Ryan Hunter-Reay! A hybrid problem causes him to stall during his pit stop. He was the race leader prior to that stop.

Lap 169 β€” Palou, Ferrucci and O’Ward all hit pit lane. Palou comes out first.

Lap 167 β€” Conor Daly finally hits pit road after nearly being taken out by Christian Rasmussen. He’s the first driver to stop under what should be the final pit cycle.

Lap 164 β€” Conor Daly’s team is asking him to make it a few more laps to be on strategy, but Daly is struggling with his tires and dropping back fast.

Lap 163 β€” Hunter-Reay is starting to pull away from Conor Daly as Daly and Malukas are starting to struggle with tires and fuel.

Lap 155 β€” Ryan Hunter-Reay might be on the right strategy as the final pit cycle creeps closer.

Lap 150 β€” With 50 to go, Ryan Hunter-Reay leads Conor Daly and David Malukas.

Lap 140 β€” Josef Newgarden has officially retired from the race.

Lap 139 β€” Newgarden is back on pit road as Daly, Malukas and Palou all battle for the net race lead.

Lap 136 β€” Alex Palou passes Conor Daly for the net race lead. David Malukas gets by Daly as well.

Lap 135 β€” Disaster for Josef Newgarden! He comes back into the pits reporting a fuel pressure issue!

Lap 134 β€” The AJ Foyt Racing cars of David Malukas and Santino Ferrucci both hit pit lane. Malukas has a great stop and gets out first.

Lap 133 β€” Newgarden, Daly, O’Ward and Palou all hit pit road.Β 

Lap 132 β€”Β Helio Castroneves has moved up into the Top-10 into P9, but makes his next scheduled stop. Takuma Sato also pits.

Lap 129 β€” Jack Harvey hits pit road.

Lap 120 β€” Devlin DeFrancesco pits and Conor Daly takes over the lead. The crowd erupts in cheers.

Lap 115 β€” The top-10 as it stands: DeFrancesco, Daly, Malukas, Palou, Ferrucci, Ilott, Carpenter, Harvey, Newgarden, Rosenqvist.

Lap 111 β€” Noblesville’s Conor Daly moves into P2 and the net race lead as Devlin DeFrancesco is on an alternate strategy.

Lap 110 β€”Β The green flag is back out as Devlin DeFrancesco leads the pack into Turn 1.

Lap 107 β€”Β The restart is waived off after Christian Rasmussen gets all kinds of sideways.Β 

Lap 100 β€”Β Kyle Larson has been checked and released from the infield medical center. In an interview, he says he “got a little too aggressive” on the restart. He’s now heading to Charlotte for the Coca-Cola 600.

Lap 92 β€” Kyle Larson’s “Double” attempt is over. Larson lost it in Turn 2 on the restart and collected Kyffin Simpson and Sting Ray Robb.

Lap 91 β€” On the restart, Ryan Hunter-Reay leads Devlin DeFrancesco, Ed Carpenter, Jack Harvey and Alex Palou.

Lap 88 β€” During his pit stop, Takuma Sato overshoots his pit box and has a long stop. Meanwhile, pole winner Robert Shwartzman also slides his tires on his pit stop and hits the wall, narrowly hitting his pit crew. The team is forced to change his front wing, but rather, Prema will retire the car.

Lap 82 β€” Rinus VeeKay has crashed coming onto pit road. Over the radio, VeeKay said he “had no brakes.”

Lap 80 β€” Josef Newgarden has moved into P10 and is just five seconds behind race leader Takuma Sato.

Lap 74 β€” Once Rossi’s car comes to a stop on pit road, the car erupts in flames, forcing Rossi to jump out of the car. His race is done.

Lap 73 β€” Alexander Rossi appears to be blowing up, his car is smoking significantly. Rossi hits pit lane.

Lap 70 β€”Β Graham Rahal, Louis Foster, Colton Herta and Scott Dixon are the four cars that are at least one lap down.

Lap 64 β€”Β Colton Herta is given a drive through penalty for a pit lane speed violation.

Lap 63 β€” Sato and Malukas are now in a duel for the net race lead.

Lap 62 β€” Takuma Sato now pits with a large pack of cars in tow, making pit road a busy place. Josef Newgarden jumps Helio Castroneves on pit lane.

Lap 61 β€” Conor Daly becomes the first driver in the lead pack to make his second pit stop of the day.

Lap 60 β€” The pack of lapped cars ahead of Sato are the three Ed Carpenter Racing cars, Devlin DeFrancesco and Jack Harvey.

Lap 57 β€” Sato begins to hang back in the draft of the pack of lapped cars ahead of him in an attempt to save fuel.

Lap 48 β€” Takuma Sato is about to catch a pack of lapped cars. He has about a 1.4 second lead over second place Conor Daly.

Lap 46 β€” Jack Harvey hits the pit lane for his second stop of the day. Sato inherits the lead. Conor Daly moves into P2.

Lap 45 β€”Β Jack Harvey leads Takuma Sato, Rinus VeeKay, Conor Daly and David Malukas. Ed Carpenter comes off pit lane and goes a lap down.

Lap 44 β€”Β Ed Carpenter hits the pit lane and Jack Harvey takes the lead.

Lap 43 β€” Rossi and Rasmussen pit. Carpenter stays out and inherits the lead.

Lap 41 β€”Β The top four β€” Rossi, Rasmussen, Carpenter, DeFrancesco β€” have not yet pitted.

Lap 40 β€” Scott Dixon is back in the race after losing three laps for a brake change. He runs 31st.

Lap 36 β€” All three Ed Carpenter Racing cars pace the field, led by Rossi followed by Rasmussen and Carpenter.

Lap 32 β€” Graham Rahal is off the pace, meanwhile Rossi and Rasmussen continue to swap the lead.

Lap 31 β€” Alexander Rossi leads teammate Christian Rasmussen on the restart. Cars are four- and five-wide on the restart.

Lap 30 β€” The field gets the one-to-go signal, but Scott Dixon is on pit road as the team attempts to change his brake calipers following a fire on the start.

Lap 22 β€” Under yellow flag pit stops, both Kyle Larson and Robert Shwartzman have slow stops, dropping both to the rear of the field.

Lap 20 β€” Another wave of light rain forces a caution 20 laps in, with Takuma Sato in the lead.Β 

Lap 1 β€” Jack Harvey crashes into Marco Andretti moments after the green flag drops to start the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500.Β 

Pace lapsΒ  β€” Scott McLaughlin crashes into the inside wall while trying to warm his tires. Scott Dixon has some fire but will continue going.Β 

1:27 p.m.Β β€” As cars complete pace laps, drivers will need to make sure there is enough heat in their tires to avoid any first lap crashes with the cold temperatures. As of now, it is 61 degrees out.

1:23 p.m. β€” Cars are rolling off the grid! The pace laps are underway!

Pre-Race CeremoniesΒ 

1:21 p.m. β€” Roger Penske gives the command to start engines.

1:16 p.m. β€” Race control announces a 1:21 p.m. command.

1:05 p.m. β€” According to Tony Kanaan, Kyle Larson has roughly a 40-minute window before Arrow McLaren will have to pull the plug on his double attempt. That means the race would need to start around 1:35 p.m. Remember, new IndyCar rules say relief drivers must start the race and cannot takeover halfway.Β 

12:49 p.m. β€” As a rain delay continues, race control has allowed teams a 10 minute warmup period. The time for the starting command remains TBD.

12:38 p.m. β€” Jim Cornelison sings “Back Home Again in Indiana.”

12:35 p.m. β€” Drivers have been called to their cars.

12:34 p.m. β€” Race control has put a hold on the command to start engines due to weather.

12:25 p.m.β€” Nine-time Grammy nominee Natalie Grant sings the National Anthem.

12:20 p.m. β€” Taps is played just before the singing of “God Bless America.”

12:15 p.m. β€” Fans have been cleared from the starting grid as pre-race ceremonies begin.Β 

11:45 a.m. β€” Driver introductions have begun as rain begins to sprinkle the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
