East Tennessee plane crash that killed Scott Bloomquist ruled a suicide

The NTSB said Scott Bloomquist died after he intentionally crashed his plane into a barn on his family farm.

MOORESBURG, Tenn. β€” The National Transportation Safety Board issued a final report on the Aug. 16, 2024, plane crash that killed dirt track racing legend Scott Bloomquist, concluding the crash was an act of suicide.

Bloomquist, 60, died after crashingΒ a small vintage plane into a barn at his family farm in the Mooresburg area near Highway 31. Bloomquist was a Hall of Fame Dirt Super Late Model race car driver.

A Hawkins County Grand Jury met on Oct. 1, 2024, and concluded that Bloomquist died by his own hand after hearing from a witness who talked to Bloomquist before the crash. The man said Bloomquist woke him up and told him that he had a “spot on his heart (widowmaker).” Bloomquist told the man he didn’t want to die in a hospital bed and said he was going to fly a plane into a barn.Β

The Federal Aviation Administration’s initial report said a single-engine Piper J3 crashed into a barn around 7:50 a.m. on Aug. 16 and caught fire on the ground. Only Bloomquist was on board. The autopsy report said he died from blunt force injuries.

“Upon arrival, officers found a plane crashed into a barn, with one occupant. Unidentified remains believed to be that of Scott Bloomquist, of Mooresburg, were found in the plane,” the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office said.
