The home
A two-bedroom, 1930s, art moderne apartment in inner-east Melbourne.
Who lives here
Interior designer Lucy Marczyk, with her husband and their spoodle, Mikush.
What we did
βThe apartment had good bones, but it needed rejuvenation,β says Marczyk. βWe renovated almost the entire place with a philosophy to retain its original interior detailing.β
Our favourite room
βIt depends on the time,β says Marczyk. βThe bedroom faces east, and I love to see the sunrise. The north-facing dining room is bright and warm all day, while the west-facing kitchen and study are ideal for evenings. Orientation is fundamental to our homeβs feel.β
The βhood
βItβs a leafy, low-rise area near the Botanic Gardens and the city. We love living within walking distance to our favourite restaurants, and arts and design precincts.β
Future plans
βApartment livingβs low maintenance allows more time for work and travel, but the next move will be to a freestanding home.β
Best advice
βA house needs to function for you,β says Marczyk. βAlways start with a masterplan, even if you undertake work in stages. And get professional
help early.β
