The house
A one-bedroom, split-level apartment in Sydneyβs Darlinghurst boasting lofty ceilings, a spacious balcony and intimate dining area.
Who lives here
Interior designer David Hicks. βMy main residence is in Melbourne, but with so many projects in Sydney, this is my home away from home β comfortable, familiar and my own.β
What I did
βWhen I bought the apartment, it felt quite dark and moody βbeautiful, but not reflective of how I wanted to live in it. I stripped everything back and started fresh, introducing a lighter, more tonal palette.β
Favourite room
βThe lower level is a very peaceful place. Itβs one continuous space, which gives it a sense of openness but it still feels intimate.β
The βhood
βI love it here. I can walk into the city, or to Potts Point or Double Bay, with ease. There are so many great restaurants, galleries and shops nearby. Itβs a very convenient way to live.β
Future plans
βIβd like to say itβs all finished, but Iβm a designer so I know thatβs not quite true. I will always find something to rework.β
Best advice
βRenovating and decorating can feel overwhelming, so be organised. Know your plan, your materials, and your budget. Being across the detail allows you to make creative decisions that count.β
