Charlotte FC wins seventh straight MLS match with victory over NY Red Bulls



Kerwin Vargas scored the winning goal for Charlotte FC in their seventh straight victory, defeating New York Red Bulls 1-0.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. β€” Kerwin Vargas sent a strike into the net after a defensive gaffe from the New York Red Bulls that proved the winning goal in Charlotte FC’s seventh straight victory on Sunday.

Charlotte’s Idan Toklomati pounced on an errant pass by New York’s Mohammed Sofo deep in Red Bulls territory and charged toward the goal. Toklomati found Vargas just on the edge of the box, who finished the job by scoring the 30th minute goal.

New York (11-11-6) controlled possession in the first half but the goal proved the difference maker. The second half went scoreless, leaving Charlotte (15-11-2) with a 1-0 win.Β 

Charlotte attempted just four shots and only two of those were on goal. The Red Bulls were much more active with 15 shot attempts, three on goal, but did not score.Β 

It’s the seventh win in a row for Charlotte in MLS competition, the sixth longest streak in league history. Charlotte’s undefeated streak is eight games.

Charlotte is fourth in the Eastern Conference, level on points with Orlando City SC. The top four seeds clinch homefield advantage for the first round of the playoffs. Charlotte has six games left in the regular season.
