CHARLOTTE, N.C. β A Charlotte church’s Nativity scene featuring mannequins dressed as ICE agents.Β
The incident happened on Thursday at Missiongathering Church near Optimist Hall. The church partnered with an art collective to create the Nativity.Β
A church official said the point is to make people think about ICE raids and immigration enforcement.Β
The church has since restored the display and says it won’t press charges because nothing was broken or damaged.Β
Since it launched, Charlotte’s Web has drawn ire from members of the community and from some state and federal representatives, though some support for the operation has also been noted. Neighbors have also handled grassroots efforts to help families who were afraid to leave their homes.
Among those who have expressed disapproval with the operation is Martha White, the granddaughter of author E.B. White. E.B. White is most known for writing the children’s book “Charlotte’s Web”, and Martha White said the operation in North Carolina’s largest city goes against what her grandfather and his book stood for.
