Meet Italy’s ‘Gelato King’ in Tuscany ahead of 2026 Winter Olympics

SAN GIMIGNANO, Province of Siena — In the medieval town of San Gimignano, Sergio Dondoli has earned the title “Gelato King of Italy,” attracting crowds from across the globe with his inventive flavors and commitment to tradition.

Dondoli’s gelato shop sits among the towers of San Gimignano, a UNESCO World Heritage site often called the “Middle Age Manhattan” for its skyline of stone towers. While the town’s architecture symbolizes centuries of power and prestige, Dondoli has built his own reputation through culinary artistry.

“For Italians, gelato is more than dessert—it’s tradition,” Dondoli said. 

His creations range from classic favorites to bold combinations such as gorgonzola with chocolate, saffron, and even oysters. 

Despite the variety, he insists the secret to success is simplicity, using only organic, local ingredients. 

Milk comes from nearby farms, and Dondoli sometimes milks the cows himself.

Visitors describe his shop as one of the most famous in the world, and lines often stretch through the town square. “Many people travel many kilometers just to try gelato,” Dondoli said, adding that his goal is to create happiness through his craft.

San Gimignano is located in Tuscany, about 35 miles southwest of Florence. The town is a popular stop for tourists exploring Italy’s wine country and will likely see increased attention as the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics approach in February 2026.
