Panthers extend defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, Canales reveals

The Atlanta Falcons and Las Vegas Raiders have requested to interview Evero for their head coaching vacancies.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. β€” The Carolina Panthers are extending their commitment to their defensive gameplan.

Defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero has received a contract extension, Panthers head coach Dave Canales revealed on Sunday.

“I have complete trust in Ejiro,” Canales said. “Love the way that he’s brought this group to play quality football together and he’s got my full support.”

Evero has been with the team since 2023. In the 2025 season, Carolina’s defense saw major improvements that pushed the team to its first postseason appearance since 2017.

Canales said there’s a 100% chance Evero will be with the team in 2026, but he has attracted some interest for a head coaching role elseswhere. The Atlanta Falcons and Las Vegas Raiders have requested interviews with Evero for their head coaching vacancies, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Canales believes Carolina’s players have bought into the system he and the coaches have developed.

“I just love where we’re headed that way and, and as always, with all of our schemes we’ll look at it and we’ll continue to evolve,” Canales said. “We’ll continue to push the envelope and move forward from there.”

In 2024, Carolina’s defense ranked last in points allowed, yards allowed, and rushing yards allowed. The Panthers picked things up in 2025 and ranked 15th in points allowed, 16th in yards allowed, and 15th in passing yards allowed.
