Bill Belichick spends day recruiting in Charlotte

The North Carolina coach spent time with players and coaches at a handful of local high schools

CHARLOTTE, N.C. β€” The kids? They were in awe.

The coaches? A little nervous.

“Yeah I was a little nervous,” said Weddington coach Andy Capone. “It was awesome to meet someone like that.”

Someone like that is six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach Bill Belichick, now with North Carolina.

Belichick spent Tuesday touring high schools around the Charlotte area to recruit high school football players to come to Chapel Hill.

“You just look up and you’re like, yeah, that’s really Bill Belichick,” Capone said.

Belichick went to Weddington, Providence Day, Hough and Myers Park.

“He cracked a few jokes and told some good stories,” Capone said. “Why he’s who he is and that he’s still got a passion for it It was awesome to meet someone like that.”

Capone said Belichick told some of the Warriors prospects how they could fit into his defense, using former Patriots Mike Vrabel and Dont’a Hightower as examples.

But a 17-year-old high school senior would have been 10 or 11 the last time Belichick won a Super Bowl. Capone said you could still see on the kids’ faces his visit resonated.

It still resonates,” Capone said. “Kids in the weight room when he walked by kind of stopped what they were doing: ‘oh my God, is that really Bill Belichick? Everyone knows who Coach Belichick is and it was awesome to have him walk through the halls. And hopefully he comes back.”
