CHARLOTTE, N.C. β The Carolina Panthers have informed veteran linebacker Shaq Thompson he can enter free agency as the team moves in a new direction.Β
Thompson, 30, has been a cornerstone of the Panthers’ defense since being drafted in the first round in 2015. Despite his leadership and dedication, injuries have limited him to just six games over the past two seasons.
Thompson’s tenure with the Panthers includes playing in a Super Bowl as a rookie alongside legends Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis. His 752 tackles rank fourth in franchise history, trailing only Davis, Kuechly, and Mike Minter.Β
“We appreciate Shaq’s leadership and dedication over the past 10 seasons,” Dan Morgan, president of football operations/general manager, said. “Always a source of passion and enthusiasm, he was committed to this organization on and off the field, poured into his teammates, and strived to bring out the best in them. We wish Shaq the best as he moves forward with his career.”
Thompson had a standout season in 2022 with a career-high 135 tackles but suffered significant injuries in the following seasons, including a broken ankle in Week 2 of 2023 and a torn Achilles in Week 4 last season. Over his career, Thompson recorded three interceptions, four forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, and 12 sacks. He also scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery in 2016.
Appearing in 123 games and serving as a team captain for five seasons, Thompson’s leadership and impact on the field have been invaluable to the Panthers. As he enters free agency, the Panthers and their fans will remember his contributions and wish him success in his future endeavors.
