Idan Toklomati and Kerwin Vargas bookended the match with goals.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. β Charlotte FC needed a win on Saturday.
Last week, the black and blue were able to get a draw at home after a losing skid on the road. And Saturday’s home match at Bank of America Stadium comes as the club and UK team Derby County reach an agreement in principle for forward Patrick Agyemang, even asΒ head coach Dean Smith urges him to stay in the MLS.
This week’s opponent was New York City FC, but both teams faced an even bigger enemy: inclement weather. After storms rolled through the Charlotte area, kickoff happened just before 9 p.m.Β
It didn’t take long for the scoring to start; 14 minutes into the delayed match, forward/winger Idan Toklomati found the net for Charlotte with a boost from Pep Biel, and New York City didn’t have an answer as halftime came and went.
The second – and final – goal of the match didn’t happen until the 81-minute mark. And it went to Charlotte, courtesy of forward Kerwin Vargas. New York City didn’t have an answer even after stoppage time was added on.
Charlotte FC needed a win on Saturday. And it got just what it needed with a 2-0 shutout win.
The next home match for Charlotte is Wednesday, July 16, against D.C. United. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. Eastern time. After that, the team is on the road again Saturday, July 19, against Atlanta United. A 7:30 p.m. Eastern kickoff time is also slated for that match.
