Liel Abada and Patrick Agyemang found the net mere minutes apart.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. β Saturday was a busy one for Charlotte. St. Patrick’s Day festivities and the ACC men’s basketball tournament brought in plenty of visitors and revelers to the Uptown area.
It was also a home match day for Charlotte FC. Their opponent? FC Cincinnati. And after a road loss the previous week to Inter Miami, the black and blue wanted a win to show which city could claim the title of the true Queen City.
As it would turn out, they got it.Β
The first half of the match was scoreless, with Cincy making a substitution and defender Gilberto Flores earning a yellow card. But after the break, Charlotte hit the gas and went full-send on the pitch.
Liel Abada found the net at the 48-minute mark, putting the first goal of the night to be tallied. But he wouldn’t be alone in scoring for Charlotte very long. Patrick Agyemang got an assist from Pep Biel just three minutes later, striking in for the second – and final – goal of the night.
Cincinnati had no answer even with six minutes of stoppage time. Flores, however, did get a red card and defender Obinna Nwobodo got a yellow card. When the clock ran out, Charlotte ensured the fortress was defended with a 2-0 blank on Cincinnati.
Charlotte FC stays home for next week’s match, hosting the San Jose Earthquakes. The last time both teams saw each other was a 2024 preseason match on home turf for the Quakes, which Charlotte won 1-0.
