Connor Zilisch undergoes surgery after victory lane injury

Zilisch, the 19-year-old Charlotte native, broke his collarbone after falling from his car during a victory lane celebration.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. β€” NASCAR Xfinity Series points leader Connor Zilisch is on the road to recovery after undergoing collarbone surgery following an injury in victory lane on Saturday.

Zilisch said a plate and screws were put in to help with the healing process. He broke his collarbone after falling from his car in victory lane while celebrating a win in the Mission 200 at the Glen at Watkins Glen International.

“Been a tough few days for me mentally, but all the love you guys have shown has certainly helped,” Zilisch said in a social media post.

Zilisch, who was born and raised in Charlotte, has dominated the Xfinity Series in his rookie season, winning six races and leading the points standings despite missing a race in May at Texas due to a back injury suffered in the Talladega race.

JR Motorsports, which Zilisch drives the No. 88 Chevrolet for, has not stated if Zilisch will miss any time because of the injury.

Zilisch was forced to miss Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Watkins Glen because of the injury. He appeared at the track, though, and was in good spirits.
