Could a future Super Bowl be hosted in Charlotte, North Carolina?

The NFL has not announced where the Super Bowl will be played beyond 2028.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. β€” With Super Bowl LIX now in the history books, NFL fans are now looking to see where the big game will take place in the coming years.

But will Charlotte be the host of a Super Bowl anytime soon? Its been discussed for years now and was a topic of conversation Monday morning on WCNC+.

The National Football League has already announced the upcoming locations dates for the next three Super Bowls.

  • Super Bowl LX – Feb. 8, 2026 – Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, California.
  • Super Bowl LXI – Feb. 14, 2027 – SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, California.
  • Super Bowl LXII – 2028 – Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia.

The NFL has not announced where the Super Bowl will be played beyond 2028.

So, is it possible for Charlotte to be a future host site? According to a 2013 NFL report on host city criteria and multiple outlets, the list of requirements include:

  • The host must be in a market that has an NFL team.Β
  • The stadium must have at least 70,000 seats, though they may include approved temporary seating.
  • The average game day temperature must be at least 50 degrees or the stadium needs a dome.
  • And there must be 35% as many hotel rooms as the number of stadium seats within an hour drive of the stadium.

Charlotte is the host city for the Carolina Panthers, Bank of America Stadium has more than 70,000 seats and the city has more than 27,000 hotel rooms. While average high temperatures are above 50 degree, the average temperature is in the mid-40s.

The NFL criteria for hosting a Super Bowl also includes requirements surrounding the parking lot, public transportation near the stadium, space for game day and NFL experiences, and practice fields for the competing teams, according to reports.

Bank of America Stadium is expected to have renovations completed by the 2029 NFL season. Last summer, Charlotte City Council approved $650 million to help fund those renovations. As part of the deal, the Panthers and Charlotte FC will remain in the Queen City for 20 years.Β
