Johnson C. Smith debuts women’s flag football with impressive finish

CHARLOTTE, N.C. β€” Johnson C. Smith has been a pioneer in several American pasttimes.

Then Biddle University, the school fielded a baseball team in the early 20th century.

JCSU also played in the first-ever HBCU football game in 1892, beating Livingstone.

This week, the Golden Bulls have another first: a women’s flag football team.

Smith took part in the CIAA Roundup in Winston-Salem this week, beating rival Livingstone to kick off a 3-1 finish in the competition.

It feels great, it’s exciting,” head coach Brandon Harris said. “It’s new. We had tryouts back in September, and it’s been taking off ever since with support and love from faculty and staff.”
