Keep Pounding High School Classic delivers unforgettable doubleheader

Hough defeats South Pointe 14-10 in a thrilling high school football opener.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. β€” The Carolina Panthers Keep Pounding High School Classic delivered two classics on Friday night to open the high school football season.

HOUGH 14, SOUTH POINTE 10

The Huskies got out to an early lead, 7-0, but neither team could punch it in for the rest of the first half.

In the second half, Stallions star J’Zavien Currence subbed in at quarterback.

The Gamecocks-bound safety kept it for one touchdown and led his team on a field goal drive to go up 10-7 in the fourth quarter.

But Hough roared back, Ethan Royal ran it in for a score after tossing a 40-yard pass down the field, making it 14-10.

Drew Johnson came up with the game-winning interception to seal the victory.

β€œWe ain’t going nowhere,” Huskies coach David Baker said. β€œWe’re the kings of the Queen City. It’s us. They’ve got to go through us to get there.”

GRIMSLEY 28, WEST CHARLOTTE 27 (OT)

The nightcap proved to be arguably the best game in the game’s history so far.

Tennessee-bound quarterback Faizon Brandon led the Whirlies to an early lead with a screen pass to Hudson Cooper who scampered 54 yards for a touchdown.

The teams went back and forth all night, but West Charlotte scored with eight seconds remaining in the game and converted the two-point conversion for the tie, sending things to overtime.

After a Whirlies score, West Charlotte punched it in again, and went for two and the win, but Grimsley stopped them to hold on, 28-27.
