Gastonia Police beat the Fire Department 10-3 in the main game. But the competition didn’t stop there.
GASTONIA, N.C. β WCNC Charlotte’s Larry Sprinkle took the mound Friday night to kick off a charity softball game between Gastonia police and firefighters.
The game happened at Sims Legion Park, which is home to Gaston College. Despite hot and sticky weather, both teams and fans came out to support the good cause.
Gastonia Police beat the Fire Department 10-3 in the main game. But the competition didn’t stop there. Police won the home run derby contest. Fire fighters came back to win the tug of war competition.
Sprinkle, who’s known for loving animals, did more than just throw the first pitch. He helped Police Sergeant David Rowland get the team’s special mascot ready for the game. The mascot is K-9 Bo, a 110-pound bloodhound who needed to get into his team jersey. Getting a dog that big into a uniform takes some careful work and Sprinkle was happy to help out.
The game brought together local law enforcement, firefighters and community members to raise money for the Gastonia Police Foundation and the Gastonia Firefighters Foundation.
