Lincoln High mourns champion Roy Lee Hughes Jr.



Lincoln High School mourns the loss of 17-year-old state champion Roy Lee Hughes Jr., who passed away on Aug. 8.

DALLAS β€” Dallas ISD’s Lincoln High School is mourning the loss of 17-year-old Roy Lee Hughes Jr., a state champion track athlete.

In a post on X, the school shared a tribute to Hughes, who died Aug. 8, according to the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office.

“We mourn the loss and honor the life and legacy of Legendary Roy Lee Hughes — a true MODEL who Defied the Odds and Defined Excellence,” the post read. “A respectful young man with a heart of gold, he became a state champion through discipline humility & an unshakeable commitment to his team & school.”Β 

Dallas ISD confirmed in a statement to WFAA that Hughes was a rising senior attending Lincoln High School.Β 

Dallas police said officers responded to the 1800 block of West Mockingbird Lane just before noon that day and found Hughes unconscious. Dallas Fire-Rescue pronounced him dead at the scene.

His cause of death has not been determined.

Hughes, who won the 300-meter hurdles state championship in 2025, was scheduled to begin his senior year Aug. 12.
