Panthers’ draft strategy focuses on defense, leaving room for offensive surprises

Carolina owns the No. 8 overall selection

CHARLOTTE, N.C. β€” With the NFL Draft two weeks away, conventional wisdom tells us the Carolina Panthers will likely select a defensive player with their first overall pick.

And perhaps the majority of their nine selections will be spent on defense.

“They will go pretty defense-heavy in this draft. I’d be stunned if they didn’t,” Charlotte Observer beat writer Mike Kaye told Nick Carboni in the WCNC LIVE Impact News Studio.

But is there a chance Carolina uses the eighth pick on an offensive weapon to help Bryce Young, like Arizona receiver Tet McMillan or Penn State tight end Ty Warren?

Kaye thinks that’s a possibility if the team is not able to receive a trade offer for No. 8 that’s to their liking.

“If you can’t get good return and McMillan or Warren, or Matthew Golden (Texas WR) could make sense,” he said. “Could they take an offensive tackle? I think that would be the surprise move.”

The NFL Draft begins Thursday, April 24. WCNC Charlotte will have weekly interviews with experts leading up to the draft on WCNC+.
