CHARLOTTE, N.C. β The Carolina Panthers are beefing up their defensive line by signing Patrick Jones II, according to multiple reports.Β
Jones had a career-high 7 sacks with the Minnesota Vikings last season, firmly establishing himself as a quality rotational player for defensive coordinator Brian Flores. Jones’ deal with Carolina is for two years and up to $20 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.Β
Jones will join former Vikings teammate D.J. Wonnum in Carolina.Β
Shortly after news of the Jones signing leaked, it was reported that Carolina is also signing former Rams defensive tackle Bobby Brown III.Β
Carolina opened free agency by signing former Raiders safety Trevon Moehrig to a three-year, $51 million contract. They were also in the mix for Eagles defensive tackle Milton Williams, but he eventually signed with the New England Patriots instead.Β
General manager Dan Morgan’s biggest move might’ve been the retention of cornerback Jaycee Horn, who is now the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history after signing a four-year, $100 million extension. Horn is coming off the first Pro Bowl season of his career and gives the Panthers a cornerstone in the secondary.Β
