With cotton dresses now relegated to the back of the wardrobe, leather and leather-look pieces shine front and centre. Arctic winds are no match for this sturdy material, which can also offer a structured silhouette in the workplace, as Priyanka Chopra discovered in London. Make the leap from a leather skirt to a dress and team with fine knitwear and grey tights. Zara faux leather dress, $119.

Right on time

Omega β€œConstellation” 28mm.

Jewellery tends to be less visible in winter, giving you the opportunity to pay closer attention to your watch. One with a colour-soaked dial can be coordinated with your outfit, providing the same aesthetic appeal as a bracelet. This Omega Constellation pushes colour-matching even further with corresponding engraved Roman numerals on the bezel. Omega β€œConstellation” 28mm, $5300.

Trench press

Steal style tips from those women who’ve made the trench a winter workhorse recently. Count Nikolai of Monpezat, nephew to Queen Mary of Denmark, showed he was certainly in the know at Australian Fashion Week. Its neutral palette pairs perfectly with a suit Monday to Friday and lightens pastel knitwear on the weekend. Hugo Boss trench coat, $849.

Back to black

Bootcut jeans are the flavour of the season since rapper Kendrick Lamar swaggered on stage at the Super Bowl half-time show in a pair from Celine. Lamar was laid-back in faded blue, while TimothΓ©e Chalamet took a bedazzled approach in Berlin. Black transitions effortlessly from the street to your favourite restaurant for a warming bowl of spag bol (and hides the splashes). Diesel β€œbootcut jeans 2007”, $230.

Loafing around

Suede loafers aren’t natural companions to inclement weather, but you can take a trans-seasonal approach with a heavy, rubber-soled skater style. If your ankles are wind-resistant, feel free to bare them as The White Lotus star Walton Goggins does here, but we suggest socks for an added burst of colour. Last Resort β€œVM005” loafers, $180.

Hello, sunshine

Why wait until spring to let the daffodils bloom in your jumper drawer? Soft lemons, pale gold and warm wheat in all wools, but particularly cosy cashmere, throw shade on drab winter attire. Tuck into roomy denim, layer beneath blazers and coats and prepare for strangers to stroke you. If you really feel like going for gold, double up like actor Donald Glover on the red carpet. Ralph Lauren β€œThe Iconic” cashmere jumper, $899.

Wicked timing

Swatch β€œBioceramic” watch.

Swatch β€œBioceramic” watch.

Signal that it’s playtime by taking a colourful approach to your watch of choice; Swatch’s square Bioceramic is just one alternative to the norm. It’s available in a rainbow of colours, but we think this β€œWhat If … Green” is where the pot of gold’s hidden. The square silhouette was, apparently, a rejected prototype for the original Swatch launched in 1983. Swatch β€œBioceramic” watch, $175.
