For many men experiencing hair loss, there comes a time when it makes sense to embrace their baldness. It felt like a momentous day back in 2018 when Prince William, 35 at the time, finally accepted his balding pate by sporting a very close trim during a visit to a childrenβs hospital.
The beauty of embracing the buzz cut is that you can style it yourself every couple of weeks with electric clippers (just remember to crop your beard short for balance). However, a bald head also comes with new considerations, so donβt forget to apply SPF 50+ to the top of your head.
Male-pattern baldness, more correctly called androgenetic alopecia, is caused by a combination of genetics and hormones. Of the latter, the main offender is DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which shrinks the hair follicles at the crown and temples. But donβt despair, says dermatologist Dr Ritu Gupta, who emphasises the importance of βcatching hair loss early and treating it with a combination of prescription medicationsβ.
Those preferring to hold on to their thinning hair should remember to keep it short and always blow-dry upwards and forwards, then use fingertips to apply a small amount of hair clay or powder to help cover bald patches.
