Annual fundraiser aims to provide scholarships for minority students pursuing golf and higher education

CHARLOTTE, N.C. β€” A legendary golfer’s legacy continues to inspire and make a difference in the Charlotte community through an annual fundraising tournament that bears his name.

Charles Sifford, a Charlotte native who broke racial barriers as the first Black player to earn his PGA Tour card, is being honored through the Charles L. Sifford Scholarship Fundraiser Golf Tournament at the Sifford Golf Course this week.

“He wanted to make it easier for those following him to have a chance. You know, better chance than what he did,” Charles Sifford Jr., son of the golf pioneer, said.

This year’s event goes beyond celebrating the sport – it focuses on community building and providing opportunities for young athletes who might not otherwise have a chance to pursue their dreams in golf or higher education.

The funds raised will directly support theΒ Sifford Scholarship, which helps cover a portion of college costs for students attending traditional universities or those enrolled in PGA-accredited golf management programs.

Sifford Jr. explained that his father’s vision extended beyond his own accomplishments on the course: “He just wanted to make the game more popular to the minorities, help the kids get an education; he never had a chance to go to college.”

The tournament serves as a pipeline for developing new talent while honoring Sifford’s trailblazing career, which included overcoming significant racial discrimination to compete professionally in what was once an exclusively white sport.

The scholarship program embodies Sifford’s belief in clearing the fairway for the next generation, ensuring they can pursue any dream regardless of their background.

“You feel fortunate enough to have someone help you come up, so now it’s your turn to chip in and help the ones following you,” Sifford Jr. said.

Since its inception, the scholarship program has helped dozens of students pursue their educational goals while keeping Sifford’s pioneering spirit alive in the Charlotte community.

The tournament has grown in prominence over the years, attracting both amateur and professional golfers who recognize the historical significance of Sifford’s contributions to breaking racial barriers in professional sports.
