CHARLOTTE, N.C. β Patrick Agyemang is officially a former member of Charlotte FC.
The club announcing on Tuesday that the star forward has joined Derby County on a permanent transfer.
The club confirms that the transfer fee will be a βrecord feeβ coming back to Charlotte FC.
That fee is reported to be about $8 million, which Charlotte could use in its upcoming transfer window to bolster its roster towards the end of the MLS season.
Agyemang, 24, joins a club in the English Championship, the second-tier league in the UK, below the English Premier League.
Last week, Charlotte FC manager Dean Smith told local reporters heβd discouraged Agyemang from making the move.
βI donβt think he should,β Smith said. βI want him to stay here. But itβs up to the player to make the decision. As long as itβs the player making the decision and not the representative. I did remind Patrick that agents work for you and not the other way around. I think the Championship is not too much different from MLS. This is major league over here. Youβre going to a second league in the UK.β
Derby County announced Agyemang will have surgery to address a hernia injury that he “has been playing for most of the 2025 MLS season” with.
In a video released by Derby County, Agyemang said glowing things about his former club, which drafted and developed him.
βI loved it,β he said. βI got drafted from college, came in and they welcomed me. I started to learn with the second team and got pushed up to the first team. The new manager (Smith) came in and welcomed me, accepted me as the player I am. He wanted me to improve and push myself and I ended up doing so.β
Agyemang, whose stock rose in his recent play with the U.S. Menβs National Team, scored 17 goals in 59 games for Charlotte FC over three seasons.
