Golden Bulls eye progress as preseason No. 2 pick in CIAA

DURHAM, N.C. β€” Entering his fourth season at JCSU, head coach Maurice Flowers now has players entering their senior seasons who were freshmen when he arrived.

β€œWe have what we call Day 1 guys,” Flowers said. β€œThey’ve taken on the leadership aspect of the football team.”

The Golden Bulls, who spoke at CIAA Media Day in Durham on Wednesday, have made progress in each of Flowers’ seasons, going 2-7, 7-3 and 8-2.

β€œWe want to keep building,” Flowers said. β€œYou’re going to have some lumps along the way. We’ve always said we don’t lose we learn. And we’ve learned a lot in our time together.”

This year, JCSU is picked No. 2 in the preseason poll, behind only Virginia Union. The Golden Bulls have not won the CIAA Championship Game since 1969.

β€œWe don’t talk about winning championships and going to playoffs,” Flowers said. β€œWe’re more concerned about doing the work that goes into being a championship team.”

Smith opens its season against Morehouse College on Aug. 30 in a game that will be played at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.
