Greg Biffle was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, North Carolina’s highest civilian honor, for his heroism in the wake of Hurricane Helene.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. β Former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle was posthumously awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of North Carolina’s most prestigious honors, for his heroism and community service in the wake of Hurricane Helene.Β
Jordyn Biffle, Greg Biffle’s niece, received the award on his behalf from North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein. She was joined by NASCAR representatives, including CEO Steve O’Donnell.Β
“Gov. Josh Stein continues the tradition of presenting this distinguished honor, and itβs incredibly meaningful to see Greg recognized in this way,” Biffle posted on Facebook. “I was touched listening to his remarks. Greg was such an incredible person, and I miss him more than words could explain.”
Biffle became a hero to many in western North Carolina, using his personal helicopter to deliver supplies to remote communities cut off by Helene. He was among dozens of volunteer pilots who flew to the mountains with critical supplies while ground crews worked to rebuild roads and bridges washed away by the storm.Β
He documented most of his experience on social media and helped connect loved ones with family members who lost communication after the hurricane. One of the most notable missions happened when a man shone a mirror at Biffle’s helicopter. After several attempts to land, Biffle was able to deliver essential supplies to the property, including baby formula, insulin and a chainsaw to clear debris.Β
“Greg would have been both proud and humbled by this recognition, and especially grateful for the continued support from all of you,” Jordyn said. “Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for the grace youβve given and support youβve all offered me.”
Established in 1963, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine is a distinguished honor that recognizes individuals who made a lasting impact on their communities and beyond. Previous recipients include Rev. Billy Graham, Michael Jordan, Harvey Gantt, Dale Earnhardt, Maya Angelou, Andy Griffith and Dean Smith.Β
Biffle and six others, including his wife Cristina and two children, were killed in a plane crash at the Statesville airport in December. The crash remains under federal investigation.Β
