Hornets trade Nurkic for Sexton with Jazz

Sexton averaged 18.4 points and 4.2 assists per game with Utah last season.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. β€” The Charlotte Hornets are adding some scoring talent to their roster in exchange with the Utah Jazz for center Jusuf Nurkic.Β

Charlotte acquired guard Collin Sexton and a future draft pick in exchange for Nurkic, a team spokesperson confirmed to WCNC Charlotte’s Danielle Stein. The draft pick was not specified.

Sexton, a former first-round pick, spent the last three seasons with Utah. Last season, Sexton averaged 18.4 points and 4.2 assists while converting 51.3% of his shots from the field and hitting 40.6% on 3-pointers. He scored the most points for the Jazz in the last two seasons, mostly by being the player with the most starts on the team.

The Hornets traded for Nurkic at the trade deadline last season in a deal that sent Cody Martin and Vasilije Micic to the Phoenix Suns. In 26 games for the Hornets, Nurkic averaged 9.2 points, 2.6 assists, and 0.7 blocks.Β

The deal stretches Charlotte even thinner at the center position. The lone center listed on the Hornets’ roster is rookie Ryan Kalkbrenner, who was drafted by the Hornets in the second round on Thursday. Taj Gibson is listed as a forward but played at center for the Hornets last season.

Charlotte finished 19-63 last season, the third-worst record in the NBA and the third losing season in a row for the Hornets. Head coach Charles Lee is hoping his second season with the team goes much better.
