North Carolina seniors return home after travel ordeal

Greensboro seniors stranded after Ireland trip return home thanks to dedicated teacher and parent.

GREENSBORO, N.C. β€” What was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime turned into a travel nightmare for a group of North Carolina seniors trying to make it home from Ireland.

After flight delays, missed connections, and days stranded in airports, these students finally made it back thanks to one determined teacher and a dedicated parent who decided to take matters into their own hands.

The group had just wrapped up a senior trip in Ireland when severe weather and airline disruptions left them stuck in airports from Dublin all the way to Washington, D.C.

With no flights left to Greensboro and no rental vans available, parent Mark Lindsay says he didn’t hesitate when he got the late-night call about his son.

β€œHad about two hours of sleep when I got that call last night, so we drove for about ten hours straight,” Lindsay said. β€œI just didn’t want them sitting in the airport hoping they might get a flight.”

Meanwhile, the group’s teacher, Victoria Payne, also jumped into action driving nearly ten hours round trip overnight to D.C. to pick up the remaining students and get them home safely. Payne even helped rebook flights and coordinate the final stretch of travel.

β€œShe’s a hero,” one parent said. β€œShe went above and beyond to make sure everyone got back.”

After finally making it home, students described the journey as β€œexhausting” and β€œa lot.”

β€œCompletely exhausted… maybe had like four hours of sleep in the past few days,” said senior Drew Lindsay. β€œIt’s been… a lot.”

Despite the chaos, there’s one thing everyone can agree on: nothing beats the feeling of finally seeing that β€œWelcome to North Carolina” sign.

For now, the students say they’re catching up on sleep, enjoying home-cooked meals and taking a break from airports. As for future trips? They say they might stick to road trips for a while.
