If there is one habit I wish to encourage, itβs the daily application of SPF50+. Wearing sunscreen is recommended any time the UV rating is above three, though itβs best done every day. Itβs also a good idea to regularly check your bathroom cabinet and discard any out-of-date sunscreens.
You may have heard a bit of buzz around an ingredient called bemotrizinol (BEMT), especially as itβs only just been approved in the US, despite it having been in some Australian sunscreens for several years.
Itβs become popular for several reasons, chiefly because it absorbs both UVA and UVB rays. Also, due to its large molecular structure, very little BEMT penetrates the skin, which aids surface protection. It is also photostable, meaning it doesnβt break down in sunlight, and is easy to incorporate into lightweight sunscreens.
Donβt forget to apply sunscreen liberally (usually more than you think you may need; your face alone needs about 1Β½ teaspoons), and donβt overlook areas like your neck, ears and the backs of your hands. And remember to reapply every few hours, especially if you are swimming or doing exercise.
